Metals explorer Impact Minerals (IPT) has significantly expanded its Arkun tenements, on the hunt for Julimar-style nickel-copper-PGE mineralisation.

The new applications expand the Arkun footprint to 1900 square kilometres.

Julimar Mark II

Soils in the Arkun area are anomalous for nickel, copper and gold mineralisation, and reinterpretation of regional magnetic data has led Impact to believe the area hosts a deep mobile belt trending down from Julimar.

If the area does contain deformed and metamorphosed equivalents of Julimar-style rocks, it could prove to be a rich deposit of nickel, copper and platinum group elements (PGE).

Impact’s belief in the area is also bolstered by the arrival of global mining giant, Anglo American, which has taken up over 10,000 square kilometres of tenements surrounding Arkun on three sides.

Impact Minerals’ Managing Director Dr Mike Jones says the arrival of Anglo American is a confidence booster.

“We view the arrival of one of the world’s largest mining companies in the middle of the Western Australian Wheatbelt as a very positive endorsement our exploration targeting criteria at Arkun,” he stated.

“In addition, it is also an endorsement of the entire concept of a new emerging nickel-copper-PGE province in this part of WA thanks to the recent discoveries at Julimar and Yarawindah,” Mike continued.

If the underlying geology does prove to hold similarly prospective formations to the Julimar area, and other nickel-copper-PGE belts around the world, Arkun could represent a major find for Impact.

Next steps

The company is expecting the grant process for the exploration licences to take around five months.

In the meantime, Impact has undertaken rock chip sampling and field checking in the hope of expediting exploration when the licences are granted.

Previous soil geochemistry data will also be checked against surface geology to assess the best surface geochemistry technique to use for the area going forward.

A detailed assessment of the magnetic data will also be undertaken to refine the understanding of bedrock geology and possibly generate priority targets for follow-up.

Impact Minerals has finished Wednesday’s session 7.7 per cent higher at a price of 1.4 cents per share.
