Concussion management technology company HITIQ (HIQ) has partnered with Rugby Australia to deploy its impact sensor technology in the rugby league.
The technology will initially be deployed in Queensland’s premier rugby first grade competition for this season.
Participating teams include Sunnybank, UQ, Easts, Wests and Brothers with all players able to use the technology.
Upon completion of the trial, HITIQ will use the data on an ongoing basis to enhance player wellbeing and concussion management across all levels.
The trial has been endorsed and supported by Chief Medical Officer of Rugby Australia Dr Warren McDonald and will be led by concussion expert Dr Andrew Gardner.
Dr McDonald hopes this trial makes rugby safer for players and enhances Rugby Australia’s understanding of injury.
“Rugby Australia is committed to making the game of rugby safe for all participants. As such, we are exploring a number of technologies to determine their tole in monitoring players, during training and playing rugby, to help us better understand all elements of the game and the links to industry,” Dr McDonald said.
“We hope that the information gained from this program will enhance our current understanding of the mechanisms of unjust and allow us to develop appropriate preventative measures.”
HITIQ’s mouthguard sensor technology detects and measures head impact exposures which allows trainers to identify, manage and manipulate contact drills to reduce head impact exposure.
HITIQ CEO Mike Vegar hopes this partnership will significantly impact players wellbeing.
“We look forward to the partnership with Rugby Australia who are showing strong leadership and progressive thinking towards the serious issue of concussion management,” Mr Vegar commented.
“The implications of a successful outcome from this program will have positive ramifications for Australian Rugby Union.”
