Anson Resources (ASN) has spiked in early trade after releasing positive results from key test work for its lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide samples.

The battery metals specialist said its high-purity products outperformed commercially available lithium compounds in many metrics when tested in lithium-ion battery cells.

Overall, Anson’s lithium carbonate product performed better than the reference materials, while its lithium hydroxide product performed similarly to what’s available on-market.

Fellow ASX-listed Novonix (NVX) took on the test work on behalf of Anson, comparing Anson’s products to other commercial battery metal products in formation cycle, ultra-high precision coulometric cycle, long-term cycle, and high-temperature storage testing.

Anson’s tested lithium was extracted from its flagship Paradox Brine Project in Utah, USA.

Essentially, Novonix charged and discharged full lithium-ion “pouch cells” hundreds of times to test the products and recorded the results.

The test work found Anson’s lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide products had higher formation coulombic efficiency and lower gas output than the referenced material.

For those not well-versed in the complicated world of lithium-ion battery performance, this essentially means batteries using Anson’s products had a longer lifespan and better capacity retention.

What’s more, both Anson’s lithium products showed less impedance growth than the material to which they were compared. Impedance growth refers to when irreversible reactions in a cell create unwanted by-products or damage electric material structures.

As such, lower impedance growth typically suggests a more stable material.

Anson Chairman and CEO Bruce Richardson said the results from the Novonix testwork demonstrated that the lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide from the company’s Paradox brines meet the specifications needed to be considered for use by tier-one battery makers.

“The purity of the Anson product provides it with a performance advantage over existing commercial products which is expected to attract lithium-ion producers that are aiming to provide a high-performance product,” Mr Richardson said.

“The results of this test work will be shared with potential offtake partners and potential customers during Anson future marketing campaign.”

He added that the sustainable method by which the Paradox products are produced bodes well for the company as demand for responsible-source materials grows.

Anson shares spiked to their highest point since January shortly after market open and have since retained the best of the gains.

At 11:19 am AEST, shares in Anson Resources were up 19.39 per cent and trading at 12 cents each. The company has a $105 million market cap.
