  • Natural flake graphite from Comet Resources’ (CRL) Springdale Graphite Project performs “exceptionally” in a testwork program
  • Tests show the graphite product is suitable for micronisation, spheronisation and purification processes when producing battery anode material
  • The graphite has also performed well in jet milling tests which, according to the company, is encouraging as jet milled graphite products can achieve premium prices
  • Managing Director Matthew O’Kane says these results greatly increase the prospects for future development of the project
  • Company shares are up 8 per cent to trade at 2.7 cents

Comet Resources (CRL) has announced positive results from testwork on natural flake graphite from its Springdale Graphite Project in Western Australia.

The testwork was conducted at a facility in Germany after identifying that graphite concentrate from Springdale was a unique product due to its very fine size fraction and nature of the fine flake.

As these properties may be applied to battery anode materials, the company decided to generate a bulk sample for evaluation.

Tests showed the graphite is suitable for micronisation, spheronisation and purification processes to the specification levels required to produce precursor material for making lithium-ion battery anodes.

The bulk sample was also tested for performance in jet milling as jet milled graphite products can attract premium prices in graphite markets. Positively, the material was easy to micronise in a jet mill with good throughput and low energy consumption.

Managing Director Matthew O’Kane was pleased with the testwork outcomes.

“The results from the specialist test programs in Germany are fantastic! They confirm graphite material from Springdale has met key battery anode grade benchmarks as well successfully producing high value jet milled product. These results greatly increase the prospects for future development of the project.”

Comet Resources will assess future work programs which include work to further optimise the processing of spherical graphite. The company is also in discussions with downstream users of graphite products regarding the Springdale Project.

Company shares were up 8 per cent to trade at 2.7 cents at 10:17 am AEST.
