Altech Chemicals (ATC) has outlined the “green credentials” for a proposed battery material coating plant at the Schwarze Pumpe Industrial Park in Saxony, Germany.

The assessment was completed as part of a broader preliminary feasibility study, which is currently being finalised by Altech’s 75 per cent-owned subsidiary Altech Industries Germany GmbH (AIG).

The green credentials assessment focused on an operation with a capacity of 10,000 tonnes per year, which has so far been designed with an emphasis on minimising the environmental impact.

The plant would also need to satisfy the Equator Principles — a framework for determining, assessing and managing environmental and social risk — if Altech is to attract the interest of future project lenders.

Following the results of this assessment, AIG has engaged Norway-based Centre of International Climate and Environmental Research (CICERO) to conduct an independent evaluation of the project.

Notably, Altech found that adding a percentage of alumina coated silicon anodes had a greater effect on the overall reduction of carbon dioxide footprint.

When the traditional graphite anode is combined with a silicon-coated one it showed an increased lithium-ion battery energy storage capacity.

According to Altech, adding just 5 per cent of silicon anode to the battery would reduce its footprint by 18.7 per cent.

Furthermore, adding 20 per cent of silicon-coated anodes would reduce its footprint by 51.8 per cent.

Altech’s assessment of the battery material plant took into account that 100 per cent of the hydrochloric acid would be recovered and recycled.

In addition, it assumed the plant would use 100 per cent renewable energy to power the plant.

Altech ended the day up 1.01 per cent with shares trading at 10 cents each.
