Production of Redflow’s (RFX) Gen3 battery has begun ahead of the company’s first commercial sale.

The Australian company produces zinc-bromine flow batteries that are made to withstand daily work in harsh conditions.

The new battery is an improvement on Redflow’s Gen 2.5 battery, incorporating a new stack design, updated electronics with increased functionality, a new tank design and cooling system.

Production began at the company’s manufacturing facility in Thailand this week and Redflow is now able to fulfil initial orders that are targeted for delivery in August.

The Thailand facility can reportedly scale up to 80 megawatts per hour of batter production per year, which CEO Tim Harris said supports RFX’s immediate growth plans.

“The launch of our Gen3 battery is a monumental milestone in Redflow’s growth
strategy.

“The combination of our new Energy Pod products with the Gen3 battery provides the platform for Redflow to capitalise on the demand for large scale, medium to long duration energy storage systems that we’re seeing emerge around the world,” he said.

Chief Operating Officer Richard Aird explained that the release of the third generation battery has been several years in the making, with engineering design and testing invested in development since 2018.

“The Gen3 battery has been designed to increase the amount of automated manufacturing we can apply and sets the platform for fully automated production in the future,” Mr Aird said.

Redflow hopes its new battery will support expansion in the United States and Australia, and will be used to fill a range of commercial opportunities currently being negotiated.

RFX shares were up 23.1 per cent trading at 4.8 cents at 12:02 pm AEST.
