Sandfire Resources (SFR) has produced first copper concentrate at its Motheo copper mine in Botswana, Southern Africa.

The company has scheduled an inaugural shipment for the middle of 2023, with its attention shifting toward ramping up the processing plant to its initial 3.2 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) capacity. This is expected to be achieved in the September quarter of FY24.

Sandfire Managing Director and CEO Brendan Harris said it was an “outstanding result” for the company and “a tribute to the excellent team that we have at Motheo”.

The company reported that construction of its mine was nearing completion, with equipment commissioning activities more than 92 per cent complete to support the initial 3.2Mtpa processing capacity.

Sandfire also announced the environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) for the Moteho A4 project was approved by the local government, paving the way for the grant of a mining licence for the A4 Pit.

This will enable the company to move forward with a low-cost expansion from 3.2Mtpa to 5.2Mtpa by early CY24.

Shares in SFR was down 2.14 per cent, trading at $5.50 at 11:25 am AEST.
