Living Cell Technologies (LCT) has entered into a research agreement with La Trobe University to conduct multiple pre-clinical studies utilising its cannabinoid-based combination drug, AI116, for the treatment of dementia.
AI-116 is composed of cannabidiol (CBD) and another off-patent pharmaceutical drug.
The studies will offer LCT valuable insights into the drug’s mechanism of action and its efficacy compared to other dementia medications.
The company has announced its intention to employ a suite of state-of-the-art experimental techniques to facilitate the research, which will be led by Principal Investigator Professor Garrie Arumugam at the LTU Centre for Cardiovascular Biology and Disease Research.
Professor Arumugam, who joined LTU in March 2020, primarily focuses on investigating neuronal cell death mechanisms in stroke and vascular dementia.
Living Cell Technologies has expressed confidence in the non-psychoactive nature and favourable safety profile of CBD.
The company anticipates that the trial results will become available at various intervals over the course of 12 months.
The outcomes of these pre-clinical studies may shape the future directions of the company’s research and development program for AI-116.
LCT shares last traded at 1.5 cents.
