ASX today – All eyes will be on how the ASX responds this morning after both Wall Street and oil prices climbed overnight.

The AFR is forecasting the S&P/ASX 200 may be a muted or lower. That follows yesterday’s fall with the S&P/ASX 200 dropping 16.20 points or 0.18 per cent to 9,053.80 and crossing below its 20-day moving average.

Overseas, Wall Street rose overnight on positive news on an easing of US treasury bond yields.

The major indexes all rose, led by the S&P 500 up 0.32 per cent to 7,716.51, the Nasdaq gaining 0.21 per cent to 26,345.60, and the Dow advancing 0.18 perc cent to 53,440.95

Meanwhile, the US government debt has passed US$40 trillion, more than doubling in a decade.

Locally, the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) is set to repay energy company AGL $25 million in penalties after the full Federal Court upheld an appeal by AGL Retail Energy and three other subsidiaries of AGL Energy.

AGL won the appeal against findings and penalties imposed by the Federal Court in December 2024 for allegedly failing to comply with their overcharging obligations related to Centrepay payments.

The AER says it took this court action against AGL in December 2022 because of the seriousness of the alleged conduct that it impacted a large number of customers including those who were likely to be experiencing vulnerability and financial hardship.

“We are also considering the judgment in the context of Federal Court proceedings instituted against four Origin Energy subsidiaries in December 2025 for alleged breaches of overcharging rules in relation to Centrepay payments,” the AER stated.
