This week on Money & Investing, Mitch Olarenshaw and I discuss how we would build a $100,000 investment portfolio based on age, risk tolerance, time horizon, and financial goals. We compare different approaches for younger and older investors and explain how the same portfolio framework can be adjusted for different stages of life.

1. Match Your Portfolio to Age and Risk

Age and risk tolerance should play a major role in how you invest. Younger investors generally have more time to recover from market declines, allowing them to take greater investment risk. Investors approaching retirement may need to protect more of their capital because they have less time to recover from a major market downturn.

2. Build Diversification Across Assets

Diversification goes beyond owning several shares. A portfolio can include equities, property, cash, precious metals, and other asset classes depending on your goals. For investors with limited capital, ETFs and real estate investment trusts can also provide access to different markets without requiring direct ownership of property or individual companies.

3. Consider Growth and Income Together

Fixed interest investments can provide regular income, but inflation can reduce the purchasing power of the capital returned at maturity. Covered calls and income-focused ETFs may provide another option for investors seeking cash flow while maintaining exposure to assets that can increase in value over time.

4. Adjust Allocations to Your Stage of Life

A younger investor with regular income and a longer time horizon may allocate more towards higher-risk growth assets such as leveraged index ETFs, Bitcoin exposure, or options strategies. A more experienced investor may combine index exposure with selected shares, precious metals, and income-producing strategies. The allocation should reflect your financial position, experience, and ability to handle market declines.

5. Have a Clear Risk Management Plan

Strong returns mean little if losses are allowed to grow without control. Setting clear exit levels, using stop losses, buying protective puts, and keeping speculative positions small can help manage portfolio risk. The goal is to know how much risk you are prepared to take before the market moves against you.

A $100,000 portfolio does not need to look the same for every investor. Your age, income, financial goals, investment skills, and risk tolerance should guide how capital is allocated across growth, income, defensive, and speculative assets.
