Allegiance Coal (AHQ) has reported further new COVID-19 cases at the New Elk Mine in the United States.

The New Elk Mine lies in Las Animas County in Southeast Colorado and has an estimated 15 billion tonnes of coal.

These new cases are a result of the escalation of cases of the Omicron variant across the US.

Currently, 22 of the 53-strong production crew have tested positive while four are isolating after being exposed.

New Elk is currently running a single production 10-hour shift per day with the available crew and AHQ expects all 26 works to return to work by the end of next week.

Further, based on vaccination rates and those with previous COVID infections, AHQ does not expect many more cases but does expect some.

This follows New Elk recording three COVID-19 cases in mid-August with the mine having to operate with a reduced workforce.

Two of the positive cases came from the number unit day shift while the third case was from the number one unit night shift.

AHQ’s Black Warrior Mine in Alabama has not been impacted by any COVID cases.

Shares in AHQ were steady on the market and were trading at 50 cents at 2:07 pm AEDT.
