Altech Batteries (ATC) has engaged the Centre of International Climate and Environmental Research (CICERO) for a green accreditation of its CERENERGY battery and project.

The company is designing and manufacturing its sodium-nickel-chloride solid-state batteries.

Altech has long noted that its batteries can function at higher operating temperatures than lithium-ion batteries, as well as posing less fire risk and reducing the use of internal liquid acids.

The company has identified another ESG strength for CERENERGY: a reduced need for critical minerals in Altech’s battery technology, resulting in significantly lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with their manufacturing process compared to lithium batteries.

CICERO will inspect this claim, as the agency has previously verified Altech’s Silumina-Anode battery technology.

“The life cycle assessment concludes that CERENERGY batteries exhibit a GHG footprint of at least 50 per cent lower than that of lithium-ion batteries,” the company wrote.

Altech Managing Director Iggy Tan expressed confidence that CICERO will verify the company’s claims.

“Considering the GHG footprint evaluation conducted by independent groups, we anticipated from the outset that our batteries would be classified as ‘green’ …. we are [now] in the official accreditation process,” he said.

“There is clearly an environmental advantage of the CERENERGY battery and proposed factory.”

The company is targeting the grid storage market with its CERENERGY batteries.

The CERENERGY batteries come in 60 kilowatt-hour (kWh) and one megawatt-hour (MWh) versions, both of which can make meaningful contributions to electricity grids.

Altech shares were up 1.11 per cent and trading at 9.1 cents at 11:01 am AEST.
