  • Altech Batteries’ (ASX:ATC) Silumina Anodes project has expanded eightfold
  • The expansion comes in the form of a DFS upgrade
  • The company will produce 8ktpa of alumina-coated metallurgical silicon
  • Customers to blend silicon with their uncoated graphite source
  • Tech is set to increase battery energy density by 30 per cent
  • Shares last traded at 7.2 cents

Altech Batteries (ASX:ATC) has confirmed its Silumina Anodes project can be eight times larger than previously thought.

A new DFS upgrade has expanded operation capacity on-site the project from 15 gigawatt hour’s worth of battery production to 120GWh.

No changes to the plant and equipment used are expected. Battery energy density is expected to climb 30 per cent.

All in all, Altech is banking on higher demand for anode products – and it expects silicon-based products to become the gold standard.

Production plan changes

The change has to do with what exactly Altech seeks to produce at its plant in Saxony, Germany.

“Initially, as per the original DFS scope, Altech had proposed the production of 10,000 tons per annum (tpa) of Silumina Anodes TM product,” Altech wrote this morning.

“[This comprised] 1000 tpa of high-purity alumina-coated metallurgical silicon incorporated into 9000 tpa of similarly coated graphite (10 per cent mix).

Customers to blend own materials

“The plant will now focus on solely producing alumina-coated metallurgical silicon product at a rate of 8000 tpa.”

Customers will receive Altech’s Silumina Anodes product and blend it with their own graphite sources.

Previously, the plan had been to conduct blending at Altech facilities – but the company has deduced it can boost output at no risk to cost by scrapping this.

Altech shares last traded at 7.25 cents.
