Altech Chemicals (ATC) has launched and registered the product name ‘Silumina Anodes’ for its alumina coated composite silicon/graphite lithium-ion battery anode material.

At its Perth research and development laboratory, Altech has been successful in applying its alumina coating technology to both silicon and particles.

Based on this testwork, when Silumina Anodes products are combined into a lithium-ion battery, the battery will provide higher energy retention capacity by volume and weight compared to a battery using the incumbent graphite-only battery anode.

The main difference is that Altech’s product will be a composite material of silcon and graphite particles that have been coated with alumina, using the company’s proprietary alumina coating technology.

Last year, the company made a “significant breakthrough” achieved by its research and development team. The team developed a silicon-based battery anode capable of increasing the energy retention and capacity of batteries by 30 per cent.

Notably, the lithium-ion battery industry has recognised that the required step to increase energy density and reduce costs is to introduce silicon into battery anodes, as silicon has 10-times the energy retention capacity compared to graphite.

Silicon metal has been identified as the most promising anode material for the next generation of lithium-ion batteries. However, until now, silicon was unable to be used in commercial lithium-ion batteries due to silicon particles expanding up to 300 per cent in volume during battery charge and that it deactivates a high percentage of lithium ions in a battery.

Altech’s “potentially game changing technology” has shown that silicon particles can be modified to resolve the capacity loss caused by swelling and first-cycle-loss capacity.

On the market, Altech was up 2.17 per cent and is trading at 9.4 cents per share at 12:29 pm AEDT.
