Aurora Labs’ (A3D) share price has boosted on news it has been engaged by BAE Systems Maritime Australia to print trial marine components for the Hunter Class Frigate Program (HCFP).
The Hunter class is based on BAE Systems’ Type 26 Global Combat Ship design, the world’s first digitally-designed anti-submarine warfare frigate.
BAE’s research and technology group is said to be looking in to large scale metal additive manufacturing (AM) as a technology for future adoption.
As A3D specialises in the development of 3D metal printing technology, it has been identified as a possible provider of powder bed fusion technology to the HCFP.
For the trial print project, A3D will be tasked with producing 3D stainless steel printed components suitable for servicing the build of nine future frigates in Australia for the Royal Australian Navy.
Under the partnership, A3D and BAE have agreed to initial investigative test printing as part of the project’s staged evaluation approach to identify locally available AM processes and their benefits.
A3D CEO Peter Snowsill said the company is very pleased to be offered the chance to perform the test printing.
“Technical validation of this kind is crucial to our commercialisation strategy and allows us to develop and position our technology to satisfy customer specifications”.
Shares have jumped 23.7 per cent to 11.5 cents at 4:10pm AEST.
