BrainChip (BRN) has spiked on the ASX this morning after confirming it has completed a key step in the production design process for its Akida product.

Specifically, the tech developer has completed the register-transfer level (RTL) design for the Akida neuromorphic system-on-a-chip (NSoC). The RTL design is a crucial part of the production process, generally responsible for modelling the flow of digital signals within the semiconductor hardware.

BrainChip has transferred its design to manufacturing partner Socionext America (SNA), which will now complete the physical design of the device.

SNL will also take on all other related engineering tasks needed to transfer the full device off to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) for photomask creation and wafer fabrication.

Masks and wafers are also key parts of semiconductor creation.

BrainChip CEO Louis DiNardo said today’s news is a major milestone for the company as it moves to commercialise the Akida NSoC product.

“The Akida device design will be transferred to TSMC for use in manufacturing production wafers in support of potential customer requirement in 2021 and beyond,” Louis said.

“Our chosen markets in Smart Home, Smart Transportation, Smart Medical, and Smart City include some of the most discriminating customers in the electronics industry,” he said.

“Through our partnership with SNA and TSMC, we have world-class resources and expect to have a robust Integrated Circuit (IC) that suits their requirements for both performance and reliability,” he continued.

The Akida device is an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered semiconductor designed to revolutionise the way we can use tech around the world.

While system-on-a-chip (SoC) tech has been around for some time now — often used in smartphones, tablets, and other smart devices around the home — BrainChip’s tech is designed to be high-performance, small, and ultra-low power to unlock the potential of “edge” computing.

With the internet of things (IoT) taking the world by storm as household devices now coming standard with internet connectivity, the need for reliable and low-power processors is on the rise. This is where Akida is designed to come in.

Investors seem pleased with today’s production design update, with BrainChip shares up 7.25 per cent and trading at 37 cents each at 11:17 am AEDT. The company has a $594 million market cap.
