Data Exchange Network has signed a NZ$1.2 million contract with Avaroa Cable to supply two state of the art landing stations for the Manatua Cable.

The Manatua Cable will be 3500 kilometre-long connecting pacific islands such as Samoa, Niue, Rarotonga, Aitutaki, Tahiti and Bora Bora to the high speed internet. The cable will be capable of operating up to 10 tera bites per second, which is enough speed to download 300 high definition movies every second.

Data Exchange (DXN) designs, builds, owns and operates data centres. The company can offer a range of solutions to meet modern data centre requirements.

Avaroa (ACL) was established by the Government of the Cook Islands to manage its involvement and operate the cable on their behalf. Funding for Avaroa is provided by the Cook Island Government, New Zealand Government Aid Programme and the Asian Development Bank.

The agreement includes two landing stations in Rarotonga and Aitutaki. They are expected to arrive in the Cook Islands towards the end of the year and go live on the Manatua Cable in May 2020.

A landing station is like a signal box, that connects the wet and dry plants. Meaning it connects the cables to land.

The cables are engineered to the exact standards and are to work flawlessly during extreme weather conditions for 25 years. Design work has started and soon to commence in DXN’s factory in Perth, WA.

DXN Chairman, Douglas Loh is happy with the agreement.

“We are very excited to be a part of this critical project for Polynesia, providing ACL with key elements for the cable landing stations,” he said.

This will be DXN’s third contract win this year.
