Eden Innovations (EDE) has received results from a more than two-year field trial on the Little River Bridge in Georgia using EdenCrete.

The company collaborated in a trial with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) in November 2019 to assess the performance benefits of adding EdenCrete to the concrete used in a new bridge decking.

EDE added two gallons of EdenCrete per cubic yard of concrete to the mix.

After two and a half years of service, cores from the EdenCrete and the reference concrete were taken from the decking and pulverised. The depth of chloride penetration in each was then measured.

Compared to the reference, EdenCrete delivered a 37.5 per cent reduction in chloride concentration at a depth of 14.5 millimetres, and a 50 per cent reduction in chloride concentration at 18mm depth.

The company said including EdenCrete to a mix adds only a small percentage to the total construction cost yet delivers full benefits, including increased compressive and flexural strength and increased abrasion resistance.

A meeting with GDOT is now being scheduled to review the results, and Eden is optimistic that this may lead to the decision to use its product in further bridge projects.

EdenCrete is a carbon-strengthened concrete additive that enhances a wide range of performance characteristics of concrete.

The product aims to deliver the benefits of several concrete admixtures in one, and is able to reduce cracking, permeability, and the burden of maintenance.
