Energy Resources of Australia (ERA) continued its focus on the progressive rehabilitation of the Ranger project during the December 2021 quarter.

The uranium producer today released its unaudited report for the three months ending December 31 2021.

Energy Resources owns what was one of Australia’s longest continually operating uranium mines.

The Ranger Uranium Mine covers 79 square kilometres and is located roughly 260 kilometres southeast of Darwin, Northern Territory. After roughly four decades in operation, the mine ceased production in early January 2021 as required by the Ranger Authority.

The Ranger Mine Closure Plan was first released in 2018 and mapped out the mine’s closure and subsequent rehabilitation of the impacted environment as a result of long term uranium mining activities.

Energy Resources was also required to undertake decommissioning and rehabilitation works by 2026 which has been its focus since the closure of the mine.

Progressive rehabilitation at Ranger over the December quarter included water treatment and completion of floor and wall cleaning activities at the tailings storage facility (TSF) which the company said was a significant milestone for the project’s closure.

Final stakeholder notification and approvals to use the TSF as a water storage facility are expected to be completed in the current quarter.

Additionally, ERA completed the first phase of revegetation planting at Pit 1 and the final planting for the pit is expected to be completed this month.

A wicking contract for Pit 3 has been awarded which will see the completion of wicking and capping prior to commencing bulk backfill.

ERA is also progressing the Jabiru housing refurbishment program alongside Jabiru Kabolkmakmen which is a non-profit organisation.

Since November, the company has been working on the reforecast of cost and schedule regarding the rehabilitation and timing for completion of the Ranger project. This process is expected to continue throughout the current quarter.

Company shares ended the day 3.7 per cent in the red to close at 39 cents.
