Concussion management technology company HITIQ (HIQ) has partnered with the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB) to use the company’s Nexus A9 smart mouthguard technology in a trial involving the national men’s and U18s teams.

HITIQ’s smart mouthguard will be used by the German men’s team at the upcoming World Championships in Finland. During the tournament, a selection of team members will use the mouthguard across a number of games.

The technology in the mouthguard will be used to quantify head impact exposure across a range of players and positions in both training and games. The data will be used and analysed by the medical, coaching and performance departments.

In regards to the U18s, HITIQ’s mouthguard will be used to establish a head impact databank for each player.

“We are delighted to partner with HITIQ, who have class-leading technology, in this trial we aim to improve our understanding of impact loads on our players in both the training and match environments,” DEB Head of Scientific Development and Education Karl Schwarzenbrunner said.

“We would hope this will further inform the debate around player load and welfare management.”

HITIQ’s mouthguard technology detects and measures head impact exposures which allows trainers to identify, manage and manipulate contact drills to reduce head impacts.

“HITIQ continues to strategically build a global user footprint with the deployment of technology into an exciting new market in ice hockey,” CEO Mike Vegar said.

“We look forward to working with the progressive key stakeholders in DEB to deliver key data and improve their care model across their junior and senior programs.”

HITIQ is targeting a growing worldwide concussion management market with its technology, including elite and recreational sport, clinical practitioners, military, research, and combat sports. Its first commercial partner is the Australian Football League, and it is pursuing an expansion strategy into rugby league, rugby union, ice hockey, lacrosse, MMA and American football (particularly the NCAA).

HITIQ was up 14.3 per cent on the market with shares trading at 12 cents at 2:17 pm AEDT.
