Legend Mining (LEG) has begun a diamond drilling program at the Mawson prospect which is part of the Rockford project in WA’s Fraser Range.

The drilling effort follows target design, site preparation, and statutory approvals, and will initially focus on two target areas.

Drilling at Target A will test interpreted extensions of massive nickel-copper mineralisation below the Mawson discovery zone, below and offset by the Mawson fault.

The company will also test the flat-lying D8 fixed loop electromagnetic conductor which is believed to be located at the keel position of the chonolith.

Target B will test an interpreted thickening of the mineralised chonolith below a metasedimentary raft. Previous work has suggested the Mawson chonolith may extend to more than 1200 metres below surface which will be tested with drilling.

“The initial diamond drill holes of the new field season are designed to test targets which have been modelled from the recently completed seismic survey data along with our existing comprehensive datasets,” Managing Director Mark Wilson said.

“The Legend team eagerly awaits the results of this drilling over the coming months.”

Once all drill holes have been completed, they’ll be subject to downhole geophysics and the data will be used to target economic sulphide accumulations and refining the existing seismic cube.

In addition to the initial diamond drilling, survey work is expected to start across some priority targets at the Rockford project some time this month. Aircore drilling is also planned once approvals have been granted.

Legend shares were down 1.20 per cent to trade at 8.2 cents at market close.
