The Holiday Inn at Melbourne Airport will be shut down until further notice as an investigation is launched into three new cases of COVID-19 among residents and workers.

According to the government agency responsible for controlling Victoria’s quarantine system, COVID-19 Quarantine Victoria (CQV), all staff and residents at the hotel from January 27 to February 9 are considered close contacts and will need to complete a quarantine period.

“As a highly precautionary measure, the Holiday Inn Melbourne Airport is being closed until further notice for terminal cleaning, and with detailed contact tracing and investigations underway,” CQV said in a statement.

The three cases linked to the hotel include two workers and a returned traveller who returned a positive test after completing her 14-day quarantine period.

Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said yesterday that all three people had contracted the virus from within the quarantine system, likely within one particular floor of the Holiday Inn.

CQV is now evacuating 48 residents who will be moved to the Pullman Melbourne to quarantine for “an extended number of days.”

Roughly 135 members of staff at the Holiday Inn were stood down last night with instructions to complete a 14-day at-home quarantine period.
