Novonix (NVX) says its research partner, Professor Mark Obrovac and his group, have developed a breakthrough method for making battery materials.

The method can be applied to manufacture both anode and cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries and is called dry particle microgranulation (DPMG).

DPMG provides a method for synthesising highly engineered particles through the consolidation of fine materials, that may otherwise be waste, into particles that are suitable for use in lithium-ion batteries.

“DPMG provides an incredible opportunity to improve upon graphite manufacturing processes with higher yield, lower cost and improved particle performance and we are excited about deploying this technology to continue to further enhance the competitive advantage of our PUREgraphite manufacturing process,” Novonix Managing Director Phil St Baker said.

“In the Li-ion battery field, I believe this technology shows great promise for reducing battery costs and increasing battery performance; while simultaneously reducing the waste and environmental impact of battery production,” Professor Mark Obrovac said.

The results are already receiving praise from professionals in the industry and Novonix has already filed patent applications protecting the DPMG process.

Novonix’s shares have soared 38.5 per cent this morning and are trading for 45 cents each at 11:06 am AEST.
