NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro is resigning from his position and leaving politics, as the State’s leadership crisis continues.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian left the top role on Friday afternoon after being caught up in a corruption probe into her relationship with MP Daryl Maguire.

Since then Transport Minister Andrew Constance has also resigned, as he prepares to pursue a career in federal politics.

Mr Barilaro said on Monday morning his decision to quit wasn’t related to the Premier’s departure, instead citing “vile and racist” attacks.

“A young boy of migrant parents, I grew up, I understood what racism was, I was called many of those names, I didn’t think in 2021 that will continue,” Mr Barilaro said.

“That in itself, can I say, was very difficult this year, and to be able to defend myself and continue with that case, I prefer to do it privately and not in the public eye.”

The former Deputy Premier is locked in a legal battle in the Federal Court with comedian Friendlyjordies over videos which alleged Mr Barilaro acted corruptly.

Following his resignation, the NSW National Party will soon meet to pick his replacement as Deputy Premier.

Treasurer Dom Perrottet is tipped to replace Ms Berejiklian as Premier, however a vote between the Liberals has yet to occur.

Once new leaders have been re-instated, three by-elections will be called across NSW to replace Ms Berejiklian, Mr Constance and Mr Barilaro.
