NSW is on track to reach a 70 per cent vaccination rate by the end of August, according to Premier Gladys Berejiklian.
Another 390 new cases of COVID-19 have been recorded in the state on Friday, the biggest jump in daily case numbers since the outbreak began.
Immunisation rates
The NSW Premier said the state was on track to hit six million vaccinations by the end of August, with almost 4.8 million jabs administered to date.
“So far we are doing very well, I think we’re up to 4.7 million, 4.8 million by the end of today, in terms of jabs,” Ms Berejiklian said.
“Hopefully we will get to five million in early next week and then sprint towards six million by the end of August.”
The Premier has repeatedly stated she would wait until more people are vaccinated before relaxing Sydney’s current rolling lockdown.
“We are looking forward to hitting those milestones, because we know that the more of us who are vaccinated, the greater opportunities we have to live more freely and safely,” Ms Berejiklian said.
Sydney’s lockdown has been extended until the end of the month, with Ms Berejiklian yet to announce if the restrictions will be extended.
Case numbers
Along with 390 new cases of the virus recorded in NSW on Friday, another two people died from COVID-19.
One was a man in his 90s while the other was woman in her 40s who is believed to have died at home in Sydney’s southwest.
The man had been vaccinated, but Ms Berejiklian said the woman hadn’t received any immunisations.
“Our heartfelt sympathies and condolences. I know every day when we read the statistics about the deaths, we often don’t remember that behind every single statistic is a loved one,” Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.
“So we extend our heartfelt thoughts to all of them.”
In Canberra, a total of four new cases have been recorded on Friday after the entire ACT lockdown yesterday mid one local case.
There are now six active cases in the region, while Victoria has notched up an additional 15 cases, seven of which were infectious while out in the community.
