Orion Minerals (ORN) has intersected high-grade nickel, copper, cobalt and platinum group elements (PGE) at the Jacomynspan Project.

The Jacomynspan Project lies 80 kilometres northwest of Orion’s flagship Prieska Copper-Zinc Project which is situated in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa.

Drilling was undertaken to investigate the potential of the shallow parts of the project via open-pit mining.

Best results include 31.53 metres 0.72 per cent nickel, 0.34 per cent copper, 0.05 per cent cobalt and 0.45g/t PGE from 100.63 metres, including seven metres at 1.55 per cent nickel, 0.35 per cent copper, 0.10 per cent cobalt and 0.43g/t PGE from 106 metres.

Pleasingly, this mineralisation lies just 85 metres below the surface and is situated within a mineralised ultramafic body that extends over three kilometres.

This result has substantially upgraded the prospectivity of the project and further drilling will be undertaken to test the upper areas.

Orion’s primary aim is to establish a JORC mineral resource to help with future economic studies.

“The high-grade massive sulphide intercept has certainly exceeded our expectations in terms of the potential for higher-grade nickel mineralisation to occur close to surface,” CEO and Managing Director Errol Smart commented.

“This is the best intersection ever achieved at Jacomynspan and confirms our view that there is a significant open-pit opportunity at this project,” he said.

“Because this sulphide mineralisation is so shallow, we see a clear opportunity to add substantial value to the project in a short space of time and at relatively little cost,” he added.

Orion is steady on the market and shares are trading at 3.4 cents at 3:11 pm AEDT.
