Online betting platform PointsBet (PBH) is celebrating another goal after the National Football League (NFL) approved it as a sportsbook operator for the upcoming 2021 season in the US.

According to a statement this morning, the selection offers PointsBet a variety of sponsorship and promotional opportunities through a number of television networks and other digital channels, including those owned directly by the NFL and its media partners.

The Melbourne-based company will also have access to official NFL data, which it says will further enhance its customer experience.

As reported by Forbes, the 2020 regular NFL season averaged 15.4 million viewers per game — excluding rescheduled games due to the pandemic. While it was the lowest average audience since 2017, viewer numbers have remained strong in an increasingly complex environment of digital consumption.

In 2019, the average viewership per game was 16.5 million people and in 2018 it was 15.8 million.

“Through our fixed odds and unique PointsBetting platform, we seek to offer the most NFL pre-game betting options,” PointsBet USA CEO Johnny Aitken said.

“This relationship now complements that pre-game offering with a heightened in-play experience as we continue to expand our national footprint on a more seamless and reliable app across every customer touchpoint.”

The partnership follows the appointment of all-time NFL great and future Hall of Famer Drew Brees as brand ambassador. PointsBet said he would transition this season from his career as a high-profile quarterback to a broadcasting role with NBC Sports.

The addition of Mr Brees is expected to deepen the relationship between NBC and PointsBet, which will be free to use the media giant’s digital network to promote its brand during NFL events.

“As part of the agreement, NBC Sports provides PointsBet with year-round, multi-platform media and marketing opportunities across its unmatched portfolio of events, including exclusive multi-platform game-day integrations across NBC Sports Regional Networks,” the company said.

Shares in PointsBet are trading in the grey at $10.28 each at 10:51 am AEST.
