Energy security takes centre stage at RIU Essential Energy

Energy security was the common thread running through two days of presentations at the RIU Essential Energy conferences in Perth, with oil and gas taking the spotlight on day one before uranium companies took centre stage on day two.

The two day event brought together energy companies, investors and industry representatives at The Westin Perth, with the programme focused on developments across the oil, gas and uranium sectors.

Day one of the RIU Good Oil & Gas Energy Conference focused heavily on the changing global energy landscape.

Speakers highlighted growing pressure on oil and gas supply, geopolitical disruption and the importance of reliable energy as countries compete for limited supply.

For Australia, that creates both challenges and opportunities. The country has significant gas resources and established export infrastructure, while its proximity to major Asian energy markets provides a natural advantage.

Day two shifted the conversation from oil and gas to uranium, with established and emerging uranium companies presenting their latest developments, discoveries and plans to investors.

The timing comes as nuclear power enters a period of renewed global interest. That growth has a direct implication for uranium.

Global reactor uranium requirements were estimated at almost 69,000 tonnes in 2025, with the World Nuclear Association’s reference scenario projecting demand to rise to more than 150,000 tonnes by 2040.

Where supply comes from was one of the key investment questions running through the uranium presentations. Australia is particularly relevant to that discussion.

The country holds the world’s largest share of identified recoverable uranium resources, accounting for around 29% at the latest assessment, although having resources in the ground is very different from bringing them into production.

The energy market is increasingly focused on security of supply. For oil and gas, that means finding reliable new sources of energy in an increasingly uncertain global market.

For uranium, it means developing enough new supply to support a nuclear industry that is once again expanding.
