S2 Resources has intersected numerous zones of sulphide, alteration and brecciation in its first seven diamond holes at its Aakenusvaara gold prospect in Finland.

Assay results are pending for these intercepts which are visibly similar to the limited historic near surface drilling undertaken by Outokumpu.

Aakenusvaara is located thee kilometres, along strike, from Outokumpu’s former Saattopora mine where copper-gold mineralisation was also associated with visually similar breccia zones and veins of pyrite, quartz, carbonate and chalcopyrite.

Very limited and ineffective diamond drilling by Outokumpu in the 1980s intersected gold mineralisation and strong hydrothermal alteration at Aakenusvaara.

These historical holes are shallow and several were drilled in the wrong direction and parallel to the lode.

One of the deepest holes drilled returned the best historic intercept of 11 metres @ 9.6g/t gold. The vertical depth was 85 metres and this is still very shallow for modern Australian standards.

A total of seven diamond holes were recently completed at Aakenusvaara in its most recent program.

The first of the holes, which was drilled as a twin of previously drilled deepest hole, visually replicated the original intercept.

The further six holes were drilled down dip and along strike from the first hole in 40 metre increments. All of them intersected similar zones of sulphides, breccia and strong alteration over widths of 5-15 metres.

While these intercepts are visually similar to the gold intercepts in the historic drilling results are still pending so the gold content is unknown.

The zone of sulphide, breccia and alteration strikes east-west, dips steeply north and appears to plunge to the east, which is similar to the layout of the mineralised mine at Saattopora.

S2’s drilling has so far defined this zone over a dip extent of 200 metres and strike extent of 200 metres. It remains open down dip and along strike to the east and west.

The rig is currently in the process of switching back to start the Phase 2 exploration program at Aarnivalkea until the assay results are received for the Aakenusvaara holes which are expected in the next six weeks.

The Phase 2 exploration program at Aarnivalkea will tighten the current broad line spacing which is currently 320 metres, follow up the better Phase 1 intercepts, and test some of the new base of till gold anomalies identified along strike.
