Lithium miner Sayona Mining (SYA) has joined forces with battery researcher Novonix (NVX), to deliver high-purity lithium hydroxide.

The two companies plan to conduct product trials, which will deliver environmentally friendly, 99.97 per cent lithium hydroxide batteries for North American electric vehicle manufacturers.

Sayona Mining has entered an agreement with Novonix and hydroxide technology provider ICS Lithium. Under the agreement, spodumene samples from Sayona Quebec’s Authier Lithium Project will be processed into lithium hydroxide, using the ICS closed-loop refining system.

From there, the samples will be sent to Novonix’s independent battery-testing facilities, located in Nova Scotia, Canada. Novonix will test the processed samples from the Authier project for their potential to deliver high-purity batteries.

This process will assess the samples’ conformity to lithium-ion battery standards, and will demonstrate the high-purity of Sayona Mining’s lithium hydroxide product. The testing will also include the development of a battery cell, based on the Authier project’s lithium product.

Sayona Mining’s Managing Director, Brett Lynch, believes that the tests will demonstrate Sayona Quebec’s ability to deliver an eco-friendly, competitive product to the rapidly growing North American industry.

“We are rapidly developing a blueprint for moving towards downstream processing in Quebec, benefitting from its environmental and economic advantages including low-cost, renewable hydropower, an established mining services industry and proximity to the North American battery market,” he said.

“These tests will underpin our ability to produce a clean and green, cost-effective and high-quality product perfect for the world’s top EV makers,” he added.

Testing at Novonix’s battery lab is set to start in May, with initial results expected by June 2021. The process is expected to continue for up to three months.

Sayona Mining is down 2.63 per cent, trading at 3.7 cents per share at 11:08 am AEDT.

Novonix is up 1.82 per cent, trading at $2.24 per share at 11:13 am AEDT.
