Security Matters (SMX) has successfully completed marking recycled plastics, enabling a closed loop circular economy for global brands and industry consortiums.

The company studied the impact of gravimetric and volumetric feeding methods on final post consumer recyclate (PCR) readings, and verifying that the accuracy and reproducibility of the markers was high in both methods.

The compounding masterbatch and extrusion processes of these trials were performed on a pilot-scale in a fully commercial and industrial facility which saw the masterbatch successfully added into the PCR during the compounding phase.

Following the trials, Security Matters found that in all cases the quantification of the PCR was successful and the layers configuration did not affect the accuracy of the PCR reading.

It was also found that the addition of pigments and regrinding of material did not have an effect on the detectability.

Security Matters believes the successful trial provides manufacturing and importation companies with a proof of concept, enabling them to accurately identify and audit via a variety of factors, including an automated transparent reporting system and the polymer type.

“Our revolutionary and innovative technology will provide companies with not only an economical solution to identify and report transparently on their recycled content used in plastic packaging, but also remove their dependency on human and paper auditing,” CEO Haggai Alon said.

Companies and potential clients are believed to be well-positioned to promote their operations as being sustainable and environmentally friendly, and will also have the ability to avoid manual-paper auditing, reducing the potential for human error and increased cost savings.

Shares in Security Matters were up 15 per cent to $0.23 at the close of trading on Tuesday.
