St George Mining (SGQ) has kicked off diamond drilling at its Paterson project in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

The 18-hole program follows maiden aircore drilling completed last year, which identified elevated levels of pathfinder elements for base metal and gold deposits.

Several of the aircore holes also intersected meta-sediments that the company interpreted to belong to the lower Yeneena basin which hosts copper and gold discoveries, including Rio Tinto’s (RIO) Winu discovery.

With the next round of work, SGQ has prioritised two target areas that are coincident with favourable structural features identified by geophysical surveys.

Moreover, the company expects diamond drilling will manage issues it saw during its aircore program when drilling through cover sediments.

As samples from the aircore drilling were contaminated with cover sediments, the company decided it was not feasible to obtain reliable laboratory assays.

As such, St George hopes the diamond drilling will provide additional geological, structural and geochemical information.

While this program is underway, the company plans to complete further geophysical surveys at its flagship Mt Alexander project which Executive Chairman John Prineas said will assist in “fine-tuning” targets for an upcoming drill program.

Shares were trading 2.56 per cent higher at 4 cents at 12:56 pm AEST.
