The outage began early this morning, leaving millions of customers unable to make mobile calls or access data services. While Telstra said most services had been restored by mid-morning, the disruption had already caused widespread operational issues across multiple industries.
One of the biggest impacts was felt across the transport network. Regional rail services in Victoria were suspended, while several train services in New South Wales were also disrupted after communications systems were affected. Hundreds of traffic lights in South Australia also reverted to basic operating mode after losing network connectivity.
Businesses also experienced significant disruption, with many retailers, cafés, restaurants and taxi operators unable to process card payments as mobile EFTPOS terminals went offline. For many small businesses, the outage interrupted trading during the morning peak and forced some customers to pay by cash or alternative methods.
The incident also raised concerns around critical infrastructure after Telstra confirmed it was investigating reports that some Triple Zero emergency calls were unsuccessful during the outage. Authorities are expected to examine the incident as part of a broader review into the disruption.
Telstra said there is no evidence the outage was caused by a cyberattack or malicious activity and believes the issue originated within network infrastructure. The company is continuing to investigate the root cause while working to restore remaining affected services.
The outage is the latest reminder of the economic importance of resilient telecommunications infrastructure, with businesses, transport operators and government services becoming increasingly dependent on uninterrupted mobile connectivity.
