TMO Market Close: Flat finish as energy weighs down ASX200

The ASX200 finished the week flat – closing at 7644 points.

The IT, healthcare and telecommunications sectors led the pack – while energy shed more than 1.3 per cent – as oil and gas prices moved lower.

In this bulletin, we’ll discuss ASX-listed stocks Boral,  Novonix, Dicker Data, Woodside, Boss Energy, Deep Yellow, Paladin Energy, Syrah Resources, Genesis Minerals and Booktopia Group.

In the green

Construction materials company Boral (ASX:BLD) was up 8.3 per cent after reporting a nearly 9.5 per cent increase in revenue and a first-half EBIT margin of almost 11 per cent. The company has adjusted its full-year guidance, targeting the higher end of the early predictions.

BLD closed at $5.86.

And another battery materials company had a strong run today – Novonix (ASX:NVX) – up more than 11 per cent – on news the company has partnered with Panasonic Energy to supply battery anode materials for its North American EV operations.

The agreement is for 10,000 tonnes of synthetic graphite anode material from Novonix’s Riverside facility in Tennessee.

Production is set to begin later this year.

NVX closed at 68.5 cents.

Tech hardware and software distributor Dicker Data (ASX:DDR) was up more than two per cent after revealing it will be paying a fully franked final dividend for FY23 of 15 cents per share – which is more than 9 per cent higher than the previous year.  

Dicker Data is set to release its annual results later this month. 

DDR closed at $11.47.

In The Red

Energy suffered the most today… it shed more than a per cent – as energy giants dragged: Woodside (ASX:WDS) was down more than a per cent, and uranium plays also fell, Boss Energy (ASX:BOE), lost 12 per cent, Deep Yellow (ASX:DYL), nearly 10 per cent, and Paladin Energy (ASZ:PDN) just over 7 per cent.

After a strong performance in early trade, graphite-focused Syrah Resources (ASX:SYR) ended up down 3.7 per cent. It announced the beginning of production of graphite active anode material from its Louisiana facility. The plant is processing natural graphite from its mining operations in Mozambique.

Syrah claims the facility will be the first vertically integrated natural graphite Active Anode Material supplier outside of China.

SYR closed at 52 cents.

Australian gold giant Genesis Minerals (ASX:GMD) has completed the acquisition of multiple gold deposits from WA explorer Kin Mining’s (ASX:KIN). Kin received $15 million cash and more than 21.9 million Genesis shares.

While Kin’s closed flat on the news, Genesis lost 3 per cent to finish at $1.56.

And online book retailer Booktopia Group (ASX:BKG) was down more than 3 per cent on guidance that underlying EBITDA for FY24 will be significantly lower – by more than $10 million, to between A$1 million and A$3 million.

Booktopia’s board has launched a strategic review of the business to find ways to return to ‘acceptable earnings’.

BKG closed at 6 cents.
