Victoria has recorded 17 more deaths and 222 COVID-19 cases in 24 hours — its lowest daily coronavirus case numbers in a month.
The effects of the state’s stage four lockdown are beginning to be seen, with today marking the third consecutive day with less than 300 new cases. However, the states’ death toll is now at 351, which is about 80 per cent of total Australian COVID-19 deaths.
Premier Daniel Andrews said yesterday it was “good cause for people to be hopeful for the future,” but has warned Victorians to not get complacent.
“This is an ultra marathon, and we just have to keep pushing forward every day,” Daniel said.
More information on the new cases will be provided at a press conference later today.
Earlier this week, Victoria reported its deadliest days since the pandemic began, with 25 deaths recorded. Of those deaths, 22 are linked to aged care facilities.
New South Wales
Three new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in NSW overnight, bringing the state’s total case tally to 3770.
With only one of those cases in hotel quarantine, Premier Gladys Berejiklian says she’s being cautious.
“My anxiety remains the same, if not slightly higher, because every week we’ve had an accumulation of undetected or unsourced cases,” she said.
“I can’t stress enough how virulent the disease is, how difficult it is to control and how much effort goes on behind the scenes,” she added.
