The Victorian government is expected to announce a lockdown today to control the state’s emerging COVID-19 outbreak.
Senior government sources are reported to have said that it will last for at least a week.
The lockdown is expected to apply to the entire state and start from midnight.
The outbreak now includes 26 cases, with 11 new cases recorded overnight.
More details about the lockdown will be released today.
There are currently more than 70 exposure sites, including the MCG and Docklands stadium.
Sites added last night included cafes and businesses across Melbourne’s south-east and the Mornington Peninsula, not just the city’s north and west as reported yesterday.
Testing capacity has increased across the state as the growing number of exposure sites affect tens of thousands of people.
There were 40,411 test results received in the 24 hours to midnight last night.
That marks among the highest days of testing in Victoria since the pandemic began.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said on Thursday that the busy border between the two states remained open. However she advised NSW residents to not to go to Victoria or Melbourne “unless you absolutely have to”.
