Novonix (NVX) has patented a novel single crystal cathode production technique, which opens the door to low-cost, high-performance battery cells.

The company believes the new system has the potential to significantly outperform traditional systems in both energy density and product lifetime.

Novonix had recently filed patent applications for its dry particle microgranulation (DPMG) technique, which offers the possibility to deliver cheaper, more efficient production of cathode materials.

The DPMG technique, along with the increased power and efficiency of the single crystal cathodes, could revolutionise the production and performance of batteries for electric vehicles (EV) and storage systems (ESS).

It’s estimated the novel single crystal system could increase battery life to power electric vehicles for one million miles, or make grid energy storage units last for two decades.

Novonix Managing Director Philip St Baker says the novel tech represents a huge step for both the company and the industry.

“The single crystal cathode development complements Novonix’s PUREgraphite anode product, both addressing the ultra-long-life battery performance requirements critical to the achieving the million-mile battery life being sought by leading electric vehicle automakers,” he said.

The single crystal manufacturing methods were developed through research funded by Novonix BTS, led by Professor Mark Obrovac at Dalhousie University.

Novonix owns all intellectual property rights over the techniques on an exclusive and royalty-free basis.

Professor Obrovac says his lab is aiming to produce high-quality materials for use in sustainable industries.

“A major focus of my lab’s research is the development of elegant dry processing methods for battery materials that are amenable to scaling, while simultaneously increasing yields, eliminating waste, and enabling the use of inexpensive feedstocks,” he said.

This sustainable approach has the knock-on effect of reducing the downstream carbon footprint for electric vehicle manufacturers. This is important in terms of their overall viability and marketing potential as green technology providers.

With the novel techniques and technologies being developed by Novonix, there could be a game-changing step-shift afoot in the EV and ESS markets.

Novonix is up 7.3 per cent today, with shares trading for 73.5 cents each as at 12:30 pm AEST.
