Queensland’s borders will open to Aussie travellers outside Greater Sydney and Victoria from November 3.
Premier Annastacia Palszczuk made the announcement today after a review by the state’s Chief Health Officer (CHO).
Speaking to the decision, CHO Dr Jeanette Young said Sydneysiders across 32 local government areas (LGAs) were excluded from Queensland travel. Deputy Premier Steven Miles echoed her comments, confirming the closure would also apply to Victoria.
“We monitored very closely the community transmission in New South Wales and Victoria,” he said today.
When asked when the sunshine state would be ready to open its borders to Sydney and Victoria, the Queensland CHO said it would come down to the evidence.
“You asking me to look into a crystal ball,” she said at Friday’s press conference.
“I genuinely do not know. It depends what happens with the virus. We are learning more and more about it every day … I look at the evidence every single day, seven days a week, and work out what is the best advice for me to provide to keep Queenslanders safe,” Dr Jeanettte stressed.
Meanwhile, WA Premier Mark McGowan is also in talks about when to relax his state’s hard border closure. The leader will meet with the State Disaster Council today to discuss yet-to-be-released public health data. Ultimately, it could lead the state government to settle on a date when WA’s border will reopen.
