A major breakthrough has seen PPK Group’s (PPK) subsidiary become the lowest-cost, high-purity boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) producer in the world.

BNNT Technology (BNNTL), a subsidiary of PPK jointly owned by Deakin University, produces high-purity BNNT, using patented technology from Deakin University.

Deakin University advised that through major breakthroughs in equipment design and production methods, one kilogram of BNNT was able to be produced over a five-day period from a singular module.

Deakin suggested this means annual BNNT production capacity per module could be around 50 kilograms, more than three times the original production estimate of 15 kilograms per module as previously reported, while still achieving more than 95 per cent purity.

The cost of each module has only marginally risen from $700,000 to $850,000 to achieve this increase in production.

“Only two years ago when PPK acquired its 50 per cent stake in BNNTTL, the company was producing only three grams per day (732 grams per year),” said PPK Executive Chairman, Robin Levison.

“The progress in developing Deakin’s patented technology to now produce 50 kilograms per year from a single module with a total capital cost of $850,000 is nothing short of amazing.”

The research team at Deakin University is continuing to work on further process design improvements to improve production efficiency and reduce costs.

BNNT Technology is now preparing to install its second production module over the next few weeks, with all major components ready to be delivered.

PPK shares last traded at $7.33 at 8:20 am AEST.
