ASX 200 futures are pointing to a weaker start, down around 0.5%, after Wall Street extended its losses on Friday. Rising oil prices are adding to inflation concerns, with Brent crude hitting near US$117 a barrel over the weekend and US 10-year bond yields around 5%.

The Dow fell 1.23%, the S&P 500 lost 0.52% and the Nasdaq slipped 0.21%. The immediate question for Australian investors is whether higher energy costs keep pressure on equities, particularly with Australia’s September-quarter inflation data due Wednesday.

But the broader story is not just about the direction of the index. Recent sector performance shows a sharp divide between financials and resources, raising questions about whether investors are rotating their exposure rather than simply moving out of equities.

What to watch today

Oil, bond yields and inflation

Higher energy prices can support producers, but they also raise costs across the economy and complicate the outlook for interest rates.

The US 10-year Treasury yield is around five per cent, adding another pressure point for equity valuations. Australia’s September-quarter CPI release on Wednesday will be an important local test of whether inflation pressures are easing or proving more persistent.

The gap between banks and miners

Recent market performance suggests investors have been favouring financials over resources. A sector tracker showed Australian financials up 5.0% over one month to 23 October, while materials fell 14.0%. Copper-related stocks were down 20.5% and lithium stocks 34.0% over the same period.

That divergence is worth watching. A weaker resources sector can weigh on the broader market even when other areas are holding up. The question is whether miners begin to stabilise or whether the gap between sectors continues to widen.

AI spending: opportunity or valuation risk?

The AI investment debate remains relevant as investors weigh the scale of spending on chips, computing infrastructure and data centres against the returns those investments can generate.

The distinction for investors is between companies benefiting from the AI build-out today and those whose valuations depend on earnings arriving further into the future. This week’s major US technology earnings should offer further clues.

On the calendar

  • Monday: Cochlear and Nick Scali annual general meetings.
  • Wednesday: Australian September-quarter CPI data, a key input into the interest-rate outlook.
  • This week: US Federal Reserve decision, major technology earnings and further US economic data.

Investors will be watching whether incoming inflation and earnings information supports current valuations or challenges expectations.

The question investors are debating

Financials and materials have moved in different directions over the past month, putting the performance gap between banks and resources in focus.

The big question

Are investors rotating out of resources and into banks, or is the recent gap creating an opportunity in beaten-down miners?

Are you following the momentum, looking for a recovery in resources, or waiting for clearer signals? What’s your read on the market?

This is an editorial question to encourage discussion, not a representation of community consensus.
