Greetings and welcome to HotCopper’s market update for Monday, Week 4, I’m Jon Davidson. Tariffs, trade wars and economic threats are back on the table to kick off CY26, in the latest evolution of Donald Trump’s grand plan for Greenland to become a United States territory; their or our own allies in Europe are now facing 25% tariff threats, even Germany and the United Kingdom.

Listen to the HotCopper podcast for in-depth discussions and insights on all the biggest headlines from throughout the week. On Spotify, Apple, and more.

That’s only if they stand in the way of Donald Trump’s move on Greenland, the justification for which boils down to three major theories: It’s about defence, it’s about rare earths, or it’s about undermining NATO.

The ASX then showing reluctance to get too excited. Utilities was leading the gainers intraday; mid-arvo, every other sector in the red. Somewhat positive Chinese economic data, with GDP up +4.5% in Q4 wasn’t enough to save sentiment.

Right now, I don’t think many Australian traders or investors are thinking about the fundamentals of China’s economy when it comes to Oz, more than they are watching what gold, silver, and Trump are doing.

No surprise either that gold and silver are cracking new all-time highs on this latest global uncertainty, Brent at $64 a barrel USD, copper up nearly 9% Month on Month. If you’re wondering why some rare earth stocks are juicing, neodymium is up 15% month on month, and uranium’s at US485 a pound, USD. We’ll touch back on commodities later WK4, should anything unpredictable happen.

Looking around the big news items today: Catalyst Metals (ASX:CYL) is now at fresh all-time highs eyeing $10/sh after company discovered a sixth underground gold zone at Plutonic, Syrah Resources (ASX:SYR) was down as a contract breach spat with Tesla rolls on into its seventh month, and Treasury Wine Estates (ASX:TWE) has seen a new billionaire player up a stake to just over 6%.

That’s The ASX Today, I’m Jon Davidson, have a great evening. We’ll see you tomorrow.
