On Chris Judd’s Talk Ya Book today, the AFL legend sat down with Orthocell Limited (ASX:OCC) chairman John Van Der Wielen to talk about the “overnight success” of the ASX-listed biotech company and its bright future.

“We wanted to start at the top and get a strong board with the right expertise,” Mr Van Der Wielen told Mr Judd. These pickups included Professor Fiona Woods AM, the Hon. Kim Beazley, as well as Dr. Ravi Thadhani, the latter of whom is the executive vice president at Emory University which boasts 35,000 employees.

Orthocell has two main products already in the chamber: A ‘grow your own bone’ dental scaffolding and Remplir, a nerve repair collagen preparing for a U.S. launch.

Both have begun shipping in countries like Austria, Germany, and Singapore, with rollouts continuing in Australia and New Zealand – and Mr Van Der Wielen believes Orthocell’s global expansion can only sell confidence.

“Investors are starting to understand respected international regulatory authorities are approving our products,” the Orthocell chairman explained.

He continued: “[Our addressable market] is in the many billions… we think anywhere between four and six billion in U.S. dollars [is possible].”

And it really does all come down to the U.S. for Orthocell: The biotech company is pushing hard to land stateside, with any spearhead there going to be the real “gamechanger” for shareholders. “The U.S. is 15 times the Australian market… and, unfortunately, with their gun laws there’s a lot more nerve damage.

“We think the U.S. market over there can be up to 25 times the size of any Aus market – and we think we have the world’s leading product that’s well on the way to approval.”

OCC last traded at 99cps after lifting 12.5% through the trading day.

Talk Ya Book was created by AFL great Chris Judd in 2019 as a show where fund managers could share their highest conviction investment idea but more importantly showcase their investment framework to the public.

In 2023, Chris joined the people he interviews in the world of funds management by creating the Cerutty Macro Fund. Chris is the founder and portfolio manager of the fund which looks to invest in long term, secular, macro trends.
