Classic Minerals (CLZ) has reached the main orebody at its Kat Gap gold project in Western Australia via a shallow test hole in the floor of a bulk sampling pit.

The company said the small section of the main gold-bearing ore zone was exposed for geological observation and analysis and to ascertain the overall thickness of silcrete overburden.

The main ore zone came into view at the predicted depth of seven metres below surface and revealed dark grey-quartz veins within strongly oxidised granite.

Classic said the orientation of the gold-bearing quartz veins measured in the shallow test hole matched the interpretation from previous drilling.

The company said the shallow test hole exposed only a small part of the main Kat Gap ore zone, which would be fully visible once the remaining overburden was removed.

A three kilogram sample of quartz vein material from the bottom of the shallow test hole was crushed and panned, which Classic said showed “good amounts of fine visible gold”.

“We dug a shallow test hole in the floor of the bulk sample pit to try and get a sneak peek at the ore before we remove the final 2m-thick layer of silcrete overburden and river gravels,” CEO Dean Goodwin said.

“The ore appeared bang on 7m below the surface, exactly where (it) should have been.”

The next phase of work involves stripping off the rest of the overburden to expose the entire orebody on the pit floor.

Classic expects the bulk sample mining program to run for between four and six weeks.

The company also recently completed a $1.5 million capital raise to help fund the proposed Kat mining operation.

CLZ shares last traded at 0.1 cents on March 22.
