The ACCC has warned consumers to check their home energy solar systems after LG recalled its energy solar batteries.

The batteries can overheat and catch fire, with nine reported incidents since October 2019 resulting in property damage.

Despite the recall, the ACCC is concerned some consumers are unaware of the danger with about 6400 batteries still yet to be replaced.

ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard said the affected batteries have also been supplied from brand names other than LG.

“We encourage consumers to urgently check if they have an LG, Solax or Opal solar energy storage battery which is included in the recall by LG,” she said.

“These batteries have already caused injury and fire damage to properties and could lead to serious injuries or death.”

Electrical regulators have recommended consumers refer to their energy storage system instruction manuals to switch off the battery.

LG will replace all affected batteries free of charge.
