Cosmo Metals (ASX:CMO) has begun high-impact RC drilling at the Kanowna gold project (KGP) located only 13 kilometres from Kalgoorlie and adjacent to Northern Star Resources’ large Kanowna Belle gold mine.

This is the first phase of a drilling program at KGP designed to test for structural and sediment-hosted gold deposits with targets defined by supergene gold and widespread pathfinder element anomalism associated with the Kanowna Shear Zone.

Cosmo’s managing director, Ian Prentice, said KGP is prospective for structural and sediment-hosted deposits, similar in style to the high-grade million-ounce-plus Invincible gold deposit at St Ives.

“It is fantastic to see the return of drilling to our Kanowna gold project right next door to Kanowna Belle and on the doorstep of Kalgoorlie,” Mr Prentice said.

“The team has done a fantastic job utilising the extensive geochemical, geological and structural data from the previous shallow drilling… to define the compelling targets that will be tested with this high-impact drilling.

RC drilling will consist of holes with depths ranging from 110m to up to 250m, including a 100m pre-collar on the planned 400m deep diamond drill hole at Laguna Verde, which is co-funded under the WA’s Exploration Incentive Scheme.

KGP covers 32 square kilometres of contiguous tenure and is strategically located with a sealed road passing along the southern edge of the project and a number of processing plants within 20 to 30km.

Mr Prentice said the project represents an opportunity for large-scale structural and sediment-hosted gold discoveries and is considered prospective for high-grade Invincible and Kanowna Belle-style deposits.

Invincible at St Ives was recognised as a major discovery by Gold Fields in CY12.

CMO is up _12.5% to 0.9¢. Mkt cap $4.722M.
