Despite deferring the FID for its Namibia-based greenfield Tumas uranium project beyond Q4CY26, Deep Yellow (ASX:DYL) shares are modestly higher in the first hour of trade Friday as the ASX enjoys a broad risk-on day.

“Deep Yellow remains committed to completing construction of Tumas … [however] current equity market conditions do not support a Final Investment Decision (FID) in Q4 2026,” the company wrote on Friday.

Long-form interviews with ASX leaders on strategy and outlook

DYL Managing Director & CEO Greg Field further elaborated on the situation.

“

Despite the compelling global uranium market fundamentals, challenging equity market conditions continue to constrain funding options for uranium developers. Against this backdrop, we believe it is prudent to defer FID beyond Q4 2026 while maintaining construction momentum and progressing our funding strategy to ensure Tumas is well positioned to advance when market conditions improve.

While the exact nature of the market equity conditions Deep Yellow referenced on Friday weren’t particularly elaborated on, presumably the company is having difficulty finding funding in the current interest rate environment, macro geopolitical backdrop, and the fact that AI projects and data centres are sucking up a lot of available funding.

That the company firmly reiterated construction of infrastructure attached to the Tumas project remains ongoing may be what spared the company a sell-off on Friday.

To date, some 170tns of reinforcing steel have been installed on-site and cement is being poured around processing equipment including large settling tanks and thickeners.

Environmental permits have been renewed by local authorities and some 440 inductions have been conducted with contractors and employees, including radiation harm prevention training.

In the background, optimisation work is being carried out to underpin an “updated value case … [which] will be released to the market in a comprehensive project update once finalised.”

So when will DYL go ahead with FID? It didn’t give a deadline on Friday and one is left to wonder if we might see that deferred well into next year given the current pressures on equity markets broadly.

Tumas is Deep Yellow’s greenfield African uranium mining project intended to develop into an open pit mining operation 100% owned by the company but where a local partner, Oponona Investments, has the right to acquire 5% post-FID.

The project sits under a 20Y mining licence and is expected to produce 3.6M pounds of uranium material over a 30Y mine life.
