- Joe Biden has been safely inaugurated as the United States’ 46th President, following a tumultuous three months since he was elected
- Security had to be bolstered in and around Washington, D.C. after Trump extremists stormed the Capitol on January 6
- Donald Trump declined to attend the inauguration, however, past presidents Obama, Bush and Clinton were present for the event

- He also used his inauguration address to call for unity, vowing to “end this uncivil war” waged by Trump supporters
America officially has a new President, with Joe Biden sworn in as the 46th President of the United States.
His inauguration, and the swearing-in of Vice President Kamala Harris, went off without a hitch, despite a tumultuous three months since the election and security having to be bolstered in the lead up to the event.
The extra security follows the deadly storming of the Capitol Building earlier this month, when Trump extremists attempting to stop Biden being certified as President.
In his first speech since taking office, Biden said democracy had finally prevailed.
“Today, we celebrate the triumph not of a candidate, but of a cause, a cause of democracy,” Biden said.
“The people, the will of the people, has been heard, and the will of the people has been heeded,” The President added.
Biden also used the address to call for unity and calm among Trump supporters going forward.
“We must end this uncivil war that pits red against blue, rural versus urban, conservative versus liberal,” he said.
“We can do this if we open our souls instead of hardening our hearts —if we show a little tolerance and humility, and if we’re willing to stand in the other person’s shoes,” Biden added.
Donald Trump did not attend Biden’s inauguration, however, past Presidents Obama, Bush and Clinton were present for the historic day.
Trump’s Vice President, Mike Pence, also attended the event after skipping the speech Trump made on his way out of Washington.
Since taking office, Biden immediately began overturning some of Trump’s key policies on COVID-19, climate change and immigration.

The President signed 17 Executive Orders, with one of them immediately terminating any funding for the U.S.-Mexico border wall enacted by Trump.
Biden has also scaled back the power of immigration officer and reopened America’s borders to Muslim countries which had been banned.
Additionally, he’s signed a mandate making masks necessary within Federal Building and vowed to re-engage with the World Health Organisation on containing COVID-19.
