Indigenous business leader Kate George has become the new Chair of gold miner Ten Sixty Four (X64).
Dr George is a Putejurra woman from the Murchison-Gascoyne region in Western Australia and was the first Aboriginal student to graduate in law from the Australian National University in Canberra.
She was also the first Aboriginal woman to be admitted to practice law in WA.
Prior to her appointment with X64, Dr George was a Ministerial Advisor at both a state and Federal level and also served as a Managing Director at PwC’s Indigenous Consulting practice.
According to the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Dr George was part of the Stolen Generation, being taken from her home at age three before growing up in a Perth institution.
Dr George went on to become an Australian business leader with a passion for Aboriginal rights and now specialises in law, governance, community development and planning in key areas including health, economic development and training.
She is currently a board member of the Australian government’s Northern Australian Infrastructure Fund and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
“I share the board’s vision that we have a unique opportunity to build true sustainable value through our activities for our workforce, our communities and our shareholders,” Dr George said.
“I am excited for what lies ahead for the company.”
With Dr George’s appointment, X64 Executive Chairman Jeff McGlinn will transition to the role of Managing Director.
Dr George will begin her role on November 25, 2022.
X64 shares were up 2.65 per cent and trading at 58 cents at 3:36 pm AEDT.
Correction: An earlier version of this article stated that Dr George was the first Aboriginal woman to chair an ASX board. This is incorrect. Katina Law, a Worora and Walmajarri woman from WA, led Ardea Resources to a successful listing in 2017 and served as Chair for three years. Ms Law was also Chair of Yandal Resources (YRL) from July 2018 to June 2021, where she remains a non-executive director.
