Lithium Energy (LEL) has confirmed its plans to pursue commercial opportunities for using its graphene in lithium-ion batteries.
The graphene is from its Burke Graphite Deposit in northwest Queensland and is one of the highest-grade graphite deposits in the world, with a JORC Inferred Mineral Resource Grade of 16 per cent total graphitic carbon.
Graphene usage in lithium-ion batteries is an emerging technology, where the material is a key additive that improves the performance of the batteries.
Test-work has confirmed the Burke Deposit is well suited for graphene production via an electrochemical exfoliation (ECE) process, due to its high-grade nature and chemical composition.
This process is relatively low cost and environmentally friendly compared to other processes, while still producing very high purity graphene products.
Notably, the ECE process is not available to the vast majority of graphite deposits.
To be able to produce graphene opens up a significant lithium-ion battery market opportunity for the Burke Deposit.
Lithium Energy is planning to undertake further work to optimise the graphene production process.
