This week on Money and Investing, Mitch Olarenshaw and I break down the four main income streams every investor needs to build real, lasting wealth in Australia, and why most people are only running one.
1. Earned Income
Earned income is where everyone starts: the wage or salary you receive in exchange for your time and labour. It’s reliable but largely capped, regardless of how hard you work. We discuss how to optimise it, from negotiating a pay rise in the private sector to understanding why some career paths, like teaching, offer security but little room for financial growth. The key takeaway: earned income is the foundation, not the destination.
2. Business Income
Moving into self-employment or running your own business removes the income ceiling, but it comes with real risk. We explain why understanding cash flow is non-negotiable for any new business owner, why revenue coming in the door is not the same as profit, and why the skills that make you great at your trade are only a small part of running a successful business. You also have to sell, market, and manage the numbers.
3. Investment Income
Once your emergency fund is sorted and your budget is under control, getting your surplus capital working harder becomes essential. We explain the difference between saving and investing, why you simply cannot save your way to wealth, and why leaving investment returns to compound rather than spending them is one of the most powerful wealth-building moves you can make. Dividend reinvestment plans and covered call strategies are among the practical examples discussed.
4. Passive Income
Passive income is the goal: income-producing assets that support your lifestyle without requiring your active labour. Think fully owned commercial properties, bond income, term deposits, or trust distributions. We make the point that investment income and passive income are non-negotiables for long-term wealth, regardless of whether you are an employee or a business owner.
